Co-taught by a team of experienced K-9 teachers with specific grade and interest group break-out sessions.

This UBC summer institute is a five-day intensive course that explores BC’s Re-Designer Curriculum. Educators in contemporary learning environments are exploring how to integrate the core competencies, big ideas and learning standards in authentic and meaningful ways across all curricular areas.

Many teachers are finding that employing a Reggio inspired approach, project and inquiry-based learning, flipped classrooms and integrated cross-curricular studies have created powerful learning experiences. These pedagogical approaches have the potential to transform classroom teaching, driving students to use their strengths as they deeply engage in learning. Student voice has a newfound position of importance in shaping the direction of curriculum. This new curriculum may lead to a shift in the teacher’s mindset with respect to planning, student learning and assessment. This course will explore all these changes. The instructors will co-teach and schedule time for whole group learning and grade or interest group focus time. The course will illustrate possibilities of a modern interdisciplinary approach capable of spanning grade levels K-9 and curricular areas.

In addition, the course will involve active participation, guest speakers, and video presentations. Participants will be involved in teacher inquiry and critical reflection to discover, articulate and explore the interconnections between theory and practice.

  • What are possible pedagogical approaches that support teacher and student learning in the new curriculum?
  • How can learning be made visible and communicated? What might assessment look like in the new curriculum?
  • How can the issues that arise from the implementation of the new curriculum be addressed?

Learning Tasks/Assignments and Expectations

The learning tasks are designed to engage participants in making connections among the principles studied, their beliefs and assumptions, and their experiences and practices in school. These tasks will not be treated as discrete assignments, but as elements of a continuous learning process involving reflection and inquiry. These will include participation, pre-readings and responses, a working portfolio, course readings, daily learning tasks, and presentations. Participants will take away approaches that will allow them to address the re-designed curriculum with greater confidence in September.
