The Masters of Education in Media & Technology Studies is a specialized graduate program ideal for those interested in Applied Design, Skills and Technology (ADST) in K12 and beyond. This program offers students opportunities to pursue a range of interests in applied design and its relationship to technology education and technology in education. The program is specifically designed for educators interested in applied design, teaching and learning within elementary, middle, secondary and tertiary levels and across formal and informal learning contexts.
About Applied Design, Skills and Technology (ADST)
Applied learning has become integral to all of British Columbia’s curricula. Through the Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies curriculum, students are offered options to develop the ability to design, make, acquire, and apply skills and technologies key to their engagement as future citizens.
This graduate program delves into key aspects of applied design, skills and technologies with connections and curriculum issues in critical design thinking, designerly ways of knowing, media and visual expression, applied design, and technological and curricular competencies integrated within and across subject domains in K-12 and beyond.
Online or Blended Delivery
All core and required courses are offered online. Approved electives may be taken online or face-to-face at UBC or other universities subject to the terms of the Western Deans’ Agreement or Graduate Exchange Agreement.

Application Requirements
All students must meet the admission and application requirements of both the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the program, which include:
- Preference will be given to those with two years’ teaching experience, those with equivalent engagement with schools, local or international communities, NGOs, and other related activities, and those with demonstrated academic interests in the area of study.
- A 4-year undergraduate degree with an average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) in all senior-level courses.
- A resumé/CV.
- A 600-word statement of intent clearly outlining your experiences and interests in the program. Specify your interest in one of the three program areas and outline how the specialization in supports your professional goals.
- Three letters of recommendation from educators, supervisors, colleagues, or clients who can speak to your engagement with , your ability to complete a graduate degree, and other relevant professional experience.

Graduate tuition is assessed as an annual program fee, which is divided into three equal installments due at the beginning of academic terms starting in September, January and May.
Students in this program will pay a minimum of 7 installments.
Student Fees
Student fees include fees established and authorized by the UBC Board of Governors and fees established and authorized by students societies. These fees are in addition to tuition fees. Please see the UBC Calendar for details on student fees.

ONLINE APPLICATION
- Navigate to grad.ubc.ca/apply/online.
- When you are ready to apply, click “Apply Online”.
- Read the instructions, and either log in with your CWL or create a CWL if you have never attended UBC.
- Once logged in, on the “Degree Program Selection,” type the 4-character cohort designation MTS2 into the “Program Keyword” field.
- IMPORTANT: The program name should be Master of Education in Media & Technology Studies Education – Professional Cohort and the cohort code should be MTS2. Please ensure you are applying to the correct program – this part-time Professional Cohort is different than the regular on-campus program.
- Select the program.
- Click the “Apply” button.
- Fill out the application as indicated.

In cases where referees are unable to submit an electronic reference, sealed and endorsed reference letters may be sent by mail. Your reference will receive a link to a reference form that they should complete and send back to us.

APPLICATION TIMELINE
After your application is submitted, all documents are uploaded, and references have been received, your application file is considered complete.
Once the application deadline for the program has passed, all completed application files are submitted to the Department for review. Applications recommended by the Department for admission are then confirmed against Graduate & Post-Doctoral Studies requirements, and accepted applicants are notified. Any special case admissions require an additional review by Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies.
The entire process generally takes 8 to 12 weeks.
