MEd in Educational Administration & Leadership

Leadership in Indigenous Education

NVIT Merritt Campus

This cohort is also being offered at our Burnaby campus.

Research has recommended that improvements to Indigenous schools and educational contexts address Indigenous community self-determination, Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), and effective preparation of educational leaders.

This MEd Nlaka’pamux Nation cohort welcomes committed individuals who will:

  • Contribute to strengthening educational success for Indigenous learners
  • Make educational sites more responsive to Indigenous families and communities
  • Guide their leadership practice through Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) understandings

If you are concerned with issues that face Indigenous communities today and aspire to engage in a Master of Education degree that seeks a balance with Indigenous knowledge and values while empowering people, this program is for you.

Nmice qtns he Helew’ Eagles Perch is excited to be a partner and to host the Nlaka’pamux Nation MEd cohort on our traditional territories and unceded lands. We look forward to working with the Educational Administration and Leadership program in the Department of Educational Studies and the Office of Indigenous Education in the UBC Faculty of Education.

Who will teach the courses in this cohort?

This cohort will be taught by Indigenous and Non-Indigenous faculty members.

How is Indigenous education addressed?

Faculty members will have a commitment to Indigenous education and will adapt existing courses to address leadership in Indigenous education. Some new educational leadership and existing courses will also be offered from an Indigenous perspective.

What support systems are built into the program?

Wide ranging supports include the Nlaka’pamux Nation, the Office of Indigenous Education in the Faculty of Education, as partners in this cohort. Specific supports address identifying Indigenous cultural knowledge holders and educational leaders to provide mentorship and guidance.

How is Indigenous research addressed and completion of the program?

Students will complete an Introduction to Indigenous Inquiry and Methodology course at the beginning of the program with a second course offered in the second year focused on Indigenous Epistemology. Research preparation and writing is addressed as a group process so that there is always a process of support from beginning to the end of the program.
