Diploma in Education – Teaching English as a Second Language
The Diploma in Education - Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) is offered for teachers interested in teaching English to speakers of other languages in BC schools, in adult community or academic settings, or overseas.
Please note: if you wish to teach ESL in BC schools, you must possess a valid BC teaching certificate.
Core Courses
- LLED 489A and 489B (3 credits each) or LLED 489C (6 credits)
- LLED 478A and 478B (3 credits each) or LLED 478C (6 credits)
Note: It is recommended you take 489A & 478A before their B counterparts. Students are also encourage to take 489 courses before 478 courses.

- A 4-year, 120-credit UBC bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- One year teaching experience.
- Must meet UBC English Language Admission Standards (ELAS)
