Child Advocacy in Action: The Legacy of Janusz Korczak

2019 SUMMER INSTITUTE

Available for credit (EDUC 490Y) and non-credit
All courses are subject to minimum enrolment. We advise that participants do not finalize any travel arrangements until notified that this course is confirmed.

This summer institute is a result of a collaboration between The Janusz Korczak Association of Canada and UBC’s Faculty of Education, and will explore the educational philosophy and pedagogy of Korczak.

Janusz Korczak (1878-1942) was an outstanding Polish-Jewish pediatrician, educator, and writer. He is best known as the author of the first Declaration of Children’s Rights, the book “How to Love a Child”, and his role of director at an orphanage in Warsaw that had its own parliament, court, and newspaper run by and for the children.

He was a pioneer who helped change our perception of children, noting that “children are not the people of tomorrow but people today. They are entitled to be taken seriously. They have a right to be treated by adults with tenderness and respect, as equals.” His pedagogy is based on the principles of trust and respect.

This institute will pursue Korczak’s work with an emphasis on the following three components:

Academic
Exploring the roots of Korczak’s philosophy and pedagogy. Discussion of the timely nature of his ideas, especially in regard to the growth of students’ agency and self-advocacy in an unstable world situation.

Pedagogical
Learning how to convert the above academic content into appropriate pedagogical materials. Analyzing numerous educational interventions, strategies, and resources developed all over the world. Meeting with invited Canadian educators, advocates for children, and professionals who are passionate about translating Korczak’s Declaration of Children’s Rights into modern classrooms and schools.

Experiential
Video and audio recordings will enhance both the academic and pedagogical components of this institute and develop open space for creative brainstorming
and discussion.
