Promoting Critical Historical Literacy for the 21st Century

The Historical Thinking Project summer institute is open to applicants from across Canada and internationally, and provides an immersion experience for:
  • History curriculum leaders,
  • History teachers,
  • Educators in history museums and historic sites.

The six historical thinking concepts — which have been integrated into a number of curriculum documents and classroom resources across the country — will provide the methodological core of the program. The “HTP” approach opens up the interpretive nature of history by making explicit and central such fundamental concepts as:

  • historical perspective taking,
  • historical significance, and
  • continuity and change.

Program Description

This exciting institute will take you on an exploration of historical thinking, while examining the themes of immigration and aboriginality. As well, we will look at the broader substantive theme of cultural exchange across borders.

Plenary lectures will be presented by Dr. Peter Seixas and distinguished guests. Field trips will enhance the work conducted during the in-class portion of the institute.

NOTE: All students, credit and non-credit, will need to access the course VISTA site for readings and important program communications. The course outline provides an overview of the material, reading list, and assignments.

Peter Seixas

Dr. Peter Seixas, University of British Columbia

Dr. Seixas is the director of The Historical Thinking Project, as well as the Director of the Centre for the Study of Historical Consciousness. He taught high school social studies in Vancouver for fifteen years, and earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of California at Los Angeles. He is the author of numerous scholarly works. His latest book “The Big Six: Historical Thinking Concepts” – co-written with Tom Morton – is a PD resource for teachers from Grades 7 to 12. It was published in the summer of 2012. Jill Colyer

Jill Colyer, Historical Thinking Project

Jill is the national coordinator of The Historical Thinking Project. She works with departments of education across Canada to have historical thinking incorporated into curriculum documents, and with major educational publishers in the development of resources for teachers and students. Jill also runs large-scale PD sessions for teachers, department heads, consultants, and ministry of education staff to explore how to integrate historical thinking at the classroom level. Participants are responsible for making their own accommodation arrangements.

Travel Arrangements

Please note this institute is subject to sufficient enrolment numbers. While we expect the institute to run as scheduled, as it typically does each year, you may wish to wait until the registration deadline to finalize payments for your travel arrangements.

We will email all registrants on May 15 to confirm.

There are two registration options:

For Credit:

UBC students should register through the Student Service Centre, in either:

  • EDCP 431/96B – Special Study in Social Studies: History (3)
  • EDCP 585D/96B – Special Course in Curriculum and Pedagogy – SPECIAL CURR&PED (3)

Non-UBC students wishing to take the course for credit must first be admitted to the UBC Faculty of Education. Read admission information here, including a link to the Application Form and who to contact for assistance.

Your tuition fee does include:

  • Participation in the summer institute
  • All printed workshop materials
  • Coffee/nutrition breaks

Your tuition fee does not include:

  • Travel to/from Toronto, including ground transportation
  • Accommodation
  • Meals

For-Credit Tuition:

Visiting Graduate Students

  • Graduate students from the Univeristy of Toronto, McGill University and University of Montreal may apply through the Graduate Exchange Agreement under which UBC tuition fees will be waived.
  • Graduate students from western Canada universities may be able to apply through the Western Deans’ Agreement under which UBC tuition fees will be waived.
  • All other visiting graduate students must be enrolled in a graduate program elsewhere and must apply for admission to UBC. For assistance with the online admission procedures for EDCP 585D/96A, contact the EDCP graduate secretary, Basia Zurek, at edcp.grad@ubc.ca.

Non-Credit Tuition:

Full payment is required with your application form in order to reserve your space. We accept payment by credit card, debit card, cheque, or money order, payable to “UBC” in Canadian dollars. Please note that should UBC cancel the course, a full refund will be issued.

Refund Policy for Non-Credit Applications: Withdrawals received in writing on or before –, will be refunded the amount paid less a $60 administration fee. There is no refund for withdrawals received after Monday, June 10, 2013.

Tuition Fee Certificate
